I enjoy the thought of responding in art to things that affect you viscerally.
This painting was done one morning when I was reflecting on some flowers that had brought me immense joy the previous week. That week had been so busy, so I hadn’t had a genuine opportunity to enjoy the flowers.
When I finally was able to sit down and enjoy the flowers, they were bent and withering. Surprisingly, despite their declining state they were still beautiful.
In a reflective moment the fading bouquet retained a quiet dignity and allure. I used bold colors to recall their vibrant past, while using textured strokes and drooping forms to express their graceful decline. The blue background subtly shifts between cobalt and cerulean, enhancing the contrast with the ornate, vintage art deco vase. Together, they celebrate the beauty in age, memory, and the art of truly seeing.
