I enjoy the thought of responding in art to things that affect you viscerally.
This painting was done one morning when I was reflecting on some flowers that had brought me immense joy the previous week. That week had been so busy, so I hadn’t had a genuine opportunity to enjoy the flowers.
When I finally was able to sit down and enjoy the flowers, they were bent and withering. Surprisingly, despite their declining state they were still beautiful.
The bright colors represent the memory of when the flowers were still thriving. The sharp and reverberating strokes coming off the flowers represent their withering state, yet still having the ability to draw you into their beauty.
The blue background appears at first glance to be solid, but looking closer one can see that there is an intermingling of cobalt blues and cerulean blues painted in a way that complements the intensity of the focal image.
The vase that the flowers is art deco and vintage; together the combination, reminded me, that aging things can also be beautiful things.
