This piece was composed accidentally. It was a piece that came to form from a drop-cloth that I was using as a paint palette, when I was working on something else. In the end, I was attracted to what was beginning to take shape on my drop-cloth palette, and so, I abandoned my canvas and focused on the ‘accidental’ piece. It seemed to be the right thing to do.
Originally it was one painting, but later separated to make two. The brown pleated paper allowed bold paint strokes to appear very fluid and create vibrancy as if it were fabric.
In these two pieces, jewel tones meet cool tones, and copper accents in both, marry the two pieces.
My husband when he saw the completed pieces said that they reminded him of one of his late mother’s toubs (the ankle length fabric draped around the body and head, often seen in women in North East Africa) and the colors do mimic some of the beautiful colors often seen in them.
That is how the name “Yomma’s Toub” was actualized for this piece.
